The genitive gathers several relationships under one roof

The genitive answers more than one question. It can identify an owner—ključ od stana—express absence after nema, follow quantities such as mnogo, and appear after prepositions including bez, iz, do, od and pored. Meaning should guide the form before memorisation begins.

Endings depend on gender and number. Many masculine and neuter singular nouns take -a, feminine nouns in -a commonly take -e, and plural nouns often take -a. Sound changes and exceptional forms matter, but a learner first needs to recognise why the genitive is present.

Vrata stare biblioteke zatvaraju se u osam.	Врата старе библиотеке затварају се у осам.	The doors of the old library close at eight.
Bez toplog šala ne izlazim po ovom vetru.	Без топлог шала не излазим по овом ветру.	I do not go out in this wind without a warm scarf.
