Following a long-form interview

This post originally contains production credits, so the added lesson does not invent biographical facts. Before viewing, predict the questions usually asked in a profile interview. While listening, separate facts stated by the guest from personal opinions and evaluations. Afterward, summarise only information you can support with the recording and quote key Serbian expressions accurately.

A full interview is a different challenge from a lesson dialogue: it runs for a long time, the speakers interrupt each other, and the vocabulary is adult and specific. The useful skill here is separating what the guest actually said from what you assume he means — razlikujem činjenice od mišljenja is the working method for the whole episode.

Interview vocabulary in Latin and Cyrillic

This is formal, public-affairs Serbian, and it is very often written in Cyrillic in newspapers and transcripts. Read the second column carefully: words like искуство, питања and мишљење belong to a register you will meet whenever you read Serbian news rather than Serbian lessons.

Working through the episode

Watch a five-minute section at a time rather than the whole interview. After each section, write down the guest's main point in one Serbian sentence and one expression he used that you want to keep. At the end, retell the interview in your own words — that final step is what turns listening into language you can use.

Summary exercise

Translate these sentences into Serbian in both scripts, then write three sentences summarising what the guest says.

4. I write down expressions the guest uses often.
5. Finally, I retell the interview in my own words.
