We just had an online party to celebrate Serbian New Year... the internet connection wasn't perfect, but  it was fun nevertheless :) Wishing you all a very happy Orthodox New Year - you can also enjoy listening and singing to the songs I prepared for this party :)

One more New Year arrives with a different calendar

The Serbian Orthodox New Year is commonly celebrated on the night between 13 and 14 January. In everyday conversation, you may hear Srpska Nova godina or Pravoslavna Nova godina, especially when people discuss concerts, gatherings and seasonal customs.

A natural wish is Srećna Nova godina! Because godina is feminine, the adjective is srećna. Add the recipient with the dative—Želim ti or Želim vam—and the wished-for qualities often follow in the genitive: mnogo zdravlja, sreće i uspeha.

An imperfect connection cannot stop a good chorus

For Serbian New Year, we gathered at old friends’ home.
Želim vam mnogo zdravlja i mirnih dana. I wish you good health and many peaceful days.
The connection dropped several times, but we continued the song.
At midnight, trumpets could be heard from the city square.
Posle čestitke svako je izabrao omiljeni refren. After the greeting, everyone chose a favourite chorus.

Turn a party memory into useful Serbian

Imagine that three guests are joining online from different cities. Welcome each guest, ask one party question and give a different New Year wish containing Želim ti or Želim vam.

  1. Complete: Srećna Nova ______!
  2. Write mnogo zdravlja in Cyrillic.
  3. Which case follows želim ti in the example?
  4. Translate gradski trg.
  5. Name the night when Serbian New Year is celebrated.

Midnight leaves three wishes in the room

  1. godina
  3. the genitive for the wished-for quantities
  4. city square
  5. the night between 13 and 14 January

Choose one song from the original party and dedicate it in Serbian to someone who made the previous year warmer. A celebration becomes language practice without losing its heart.
