If you watched our previous podcast, you'll be aware that Jeremija keeps making mistakes, and I do my best to help him understand which forms are correct. This time the topic was "bio" or "bila":

Are there any other mistakes that I didn't correct ?

Jeremija’s tired answer leaves agreement clues behind

In sam bio and sam bila, sam identifies first person but does not reveal gender. The participle supplies that information. A male speaker uses bio, a female speaker bila, and a neuter singular subject bilo.

Plural agreement depends on the group: bili accompanies masculine or mixed groups, bile an all-female group, and bila neuter plural nouns such as deca. Correct only the grammatical mismatch; do not rewrite the speaker’s intended meaning.

The auxiliary may be right while the participle is wrong

Četiri devojke su bile spremne za kviz.Четири девојке су биле спремне за квиз.Four girls were ready for the quiz.

Repair the sentence without changing its story

Pause after each answer and write only the subject plus participle. Mark agreement as correct or incorrect, repair it if necessary, and replay to find any second mistake the first correction distracted you from.

  1. Complete: Ana je ______ kod kuće.
  2. Write Pismo je bilo in Cyrillic.
  3. Which form suits a mixed group?
  4. Which form suits deca?
  5. Correct: Devojke su bili spremne.

The mistake list ends with one self-correction

  1. bila
  2. Писмо је било
  3. bili
  4. bila
  5. Devojke su bile spremne.

Invent one plausible wrong answer for a partner and let them diagnose it aloud. Explaining why a form fails makes the correct agreement harder to forget.
