Cooking as a way into the imperative

Recipes naturally combine quantities, the genitive case and imperative or passive-style instructions. After od, bez and many quantity expressions, the following noun appears in the genitive. Ingredient names may change predictably, but learners should notice irregular or less common forms. Cooking verbs also form useful aspect pairs because preparation involves both a process and a completed result.

Recipes are almost entirely imperative, which makes them an unusually clean source of that form. Dodajte, isecite, pomešajte — every instruction is a command in the polite plural. Read the steps in order and notice that the form barely changes; once you have the pattern, an entire recipe becomes readable.

Recipe sentences in Latin and Cyrillic

Latin scriptCyrillic scriptEnglish
Dodajte malo crvene paprike.Додајте мало црвене паприке.Add a little red pepper.
Jelo se sastoji od piletine i povrća.Јело се састоји од пилетине и поврћа.The dish consists of chicken and vegetables.
Isecite šargarepu na tanke kolutove.Исеците шаргарепу на танке колутове.Cut the carrot into thin slices.
Pržite luk dok ne omekša.Пржите лук док не омекша.Fry the onion until it softens.
Na kraju sipajte malo sirćeta.На крају сипајте мало сирћета.Finally, pour in a little vinegar.

Serbian cookbooks and food packaging use both alphabets, often on the same page, so this is practical Cyrillic reading rather than an exercise. Look at the ingredient names in the second column: шаргарепа, паприка, пилетина are words you will need in a Serbian shop.

Cooking it out loud

Read the recipe aloud as if you were dictating it to someone else, then try to say the steps from memory in the right order. If you actually cook the dish while narrating it in Serbian, the vocabulary attaches itself to the actions and you will not need to revise it.
