Understanding humour in a second language
Comedy at this level depends on more than individual words. Pay attention to who speaks, what the characters assume, and why a phrase is funny in that situation. First identify concrete food vocabulary, then notice exaggeration, invented dishes and shifts in register. On a final viewing, imitate one short exchange to practise rhythm and reduced colloquial pronunciation.
Comedy is the last thing to become comprehensible, because it depends on timing, register and shared reference rather than vocabulary. Nisam odmah razumeo šalu is an honest sentence for any learner at this stage. Watch the sketch twice before reading anything, and accept that the joke may land on the second viewing rather than the first.
Sentences from the sketch, in both alphabets
| Latin script | Cyrillic script | English |
|---|---|---|
| U ovoj epizodi pominju se razna jela. | У овој епизоди помињу се разна јела. | Various dishes are mentioned in this episode. |
| Likovi preteruju da bi bili smešni. | Ликови претерују да би били смешни. | The characters exaggerate to be funny. |
| Nisam odmah razumeo šalu. | Нисам одмах разумео шалу. | I did not understand the joke immediately. |
| Ponovo sam poslušala razgovor. | Поново сам послушала разговор. | I listened to the conversation again. |
| Kolokvijalni izrazi otkrivaju odnos među likovima. | Колоквијални изрази откривају однос међу ликовима. | Colloquial expressions reveal the relationship between the characters. |
The characters speak in an exaggerated colloquial register, full of shortened forms and regional colour. The written sentences here are a cleaned-up version that lets you see the structure underneath. Read them in Cyrillic too, then go back to the audio and listen for the same structures moving much faster.
Working through the sketch
Watch once for the situation, once with the sentences in front of you, and once more for the timing. Then try to explain in two Serbian sentences why it is funny. Being able to explain a joke in the target language is a genuinely advanced skill and a good measure of where you are.
Comprehension exercise
Translate these sentences into Serbian in both scripts, then write two sentences of your own about what happens in the sketch.
- Various dishes are mentioned in this episode.
- The characters exaggerate to be funny.
- I did not understand the joke immediately.
- I listened to the conversation again.
- Colloquial expressions reveal the relationship between the characters.
