Three irregular verbs you cannot avoid

Ići, jesti and piti are among the first verbs a learner needs and all three are irregular, which is bad luck but also good news: you meet them so often that the forms settle quickly. Notice that the stem changes and the infinitive is no guide — ići gives idem, jesti gives jedem, piti gives pijem.

In the past tense all three behave regularly again, using the -o / -la / -lo participle with the auxiliary: išao sam, jela sam, pili smo. And for the future you keep the infinitive: ići ću, ješću, piću.

    One verb, three times

Take each verb and say one sentence in the present, one in the past and one in the future, about your own day. Three sentences per verb, nine in total. Doing it in that order — always present, past, future — is what stops you learning one tense and freezing there.
