One is an adjective, the other is an adverb

Dobar describes a thing or a person and therefore changes with it: dobar film, dobra ideja, dobro jutro. Dobro describes how something happens and never changes: Dobro govorim srpski, Ona dobro kuva, Sve je prošlo dobro.

This is why Kako si? — Dobro sam is correct and Dobar sam means something else entirely — that you are a good person, or good at something. The neuter singular of the adjective and the adverb look identical, which is precisely the trap; the question you ask yourself is whether the word is describing a noun or a verb.

Dobar or dobro?

Ask the question before you choose

Before every use, ask yourself one thing: am I describing a noun or a verb? If it is a noun, the word has to agree with it. If it is a verb, the word stays dobro whatever happens. Say five sentences of each kind aloud and the distinction becomes automatic.

Choose the right form

Translate these sentences and, beside each one, write whether you needed the adjective or the adverb. Both scripts.

  1. She is a good student.
  2. You cook well.
  3. We had a good time.
  4. How are you? — I am fine.
  5. This is a good example.
