Ask “who” only when a person is hiding
Ko je ovo? asks about a person: “Who is this?” Šta je ovo? asks about an object, animal, idea or unfamiliar thing: “What is this?” Serbian keeps the same answer frame, Ovo je…, for all three noun genders.
When the answer contains more than one person or thing, change the verb: Ovo su studenti. English also changes “this is” to “these are,” but Serbian ovo remains unchanged.

Point first; reveal the noun second
Place five objects in a bag. One student touches an item and asks Šta je ovo?; another guesses with Ovo je… For photographs of people, switch to Ko je ovo? The uncertainty makes the question genuine.
