Comparatives of Serbian Adjectives in Context

Build the middle step before reaching naj-

A comparative is not a separate, genderless vocabulary item. It behaves like an adjective and agrees with its noun: lakši zadatak, lakša vežba, lakše pitanje. The ending tells you which noun the description belongs to even when word order changes.

Several everyday adjectives use irregular or shortened forms worth learning as complete families: dobar–bolji, loš–gori, mali–manji, velik–veći. With two items, say X je bolji od Y. When one item stands above an entire group, use naj- and a phrase such as od svih.

Gender follows the noun up the comparison ladder

Plavi ranac je lakši od crvenog kofera.	Плави ранац је лакши од црвеног кофера.	The blue backpack is lighter than the red suitcase.
Današnja vežba je kraća, ali zahtevnija.	Данашња вежба је краћа, али захтевнија.	Today’s exercise is shorter but more demanding.
Ovo objašnjenje je jasnije od prevoda u rečniku.	Ово објашњење је јасније од превода у речнику.	This explanation is clearer than the translation in the dictionary.
Moj mlađi brat bira veći komad lubenice.	Мој млађи брат бира већи комад лубенице.	My younger brother chooses the larger piece of watermelon.
Treći zadatak je najteži od svih ponuđenih.	Трећи задатак је најтежи од свих понуђених.	The third task is the most difficult of all those offered.

Finish by comparing two study methods and one real-life situation. Forms become durable when they escape the exercise and enter your own choices.
