Three answers trace three different points on your map
Odakle si?, Gde si rođen/rođena? and Gde živiš? may all receive the name of a place, yet Serbian does not package that place in the same way. Origin is movement away from a point, so iz requires the genitive: iz Beograda. Birth and residence locate an event or a person inside a place, so u is followed by the locative: u Beogradu.
The city name therefore changes according to its job in the sentence. Compare the compact biography Ja sam iz Novog Sada, rođena sam u Subotici, a sada živim u Nišu. The first place answers “from where?”, while the other two answer “where?”.

Country names behave by the same contrast: iz Srbije but u Srbiji, iz Hrvatske but u Hrvatskoj. With a masculine city ending in a consonant, the genitive often ends in -a and the locative in -u: iz Beograda / u Beogradu. Forms must still be learned with care because place names do not all follow one visual pattern.

Say your three-part answer without looking at the endings. Next, replace every location with a new city or country and listen for the contrast between departure and position. That small geographical story gives both cases a clear purpose.
