Explore Serbian word stress at upper-intermediate and advanced levels by listening for vowel length, pitch movement and the position of the stressed syllable.
Stress Patterns in Serbian
The following two videos are great for the students at upper-intermediate and advanced levels who are interested in stress patterns in Serbian and who can easily read Serbian Cyrillic script.Hearing where the stress falls
Standard Serbian has a pitch-accent system with short and long, rising and falling accents. These accents are normally not written in everyday texts, so learners must build them through careful listening. Start by marking the stressed syllable, then notice length, and only later focus on pitch direction. Compare forms from the same word family because stress can shift during inflection or derivation.
Serbian stress never falls on the last syllable of a word, which already narrows your options considerably. Beyond that, it carries pitch and length, and those distinctions are what make a foreign accent sound foreign even when every sound is correct. Start by listening for which syllable is louder, and leave pitch for later.
Stress and rhythm sentences, in both scripts
| Latin script | Cyrillic script | English |
|---|---|---|
| Govorim srpski polako i jasno. | Говорим српски полако и јасно. | I speak Serbian slowly and clearly. |
| Pažljivo slušam naglašeni slog. | Пажљиво слушам наглашени слог. | I listen carefully to the stressed syllable. |
| Dužina samoglasnika može promeniti ritam reči. | Дужина самогласника може променити ритам речи. | Vowel length can change the rhythm of a word. |
| Ponavljam rečenicu istim tempom. | Понављам реченицу истим темпом. | I repeat the sentence at the same tempo. |
| Snimam svoj glas i poredim izgovor. | Снимам свој глас и поредим изговор. | I record my voice and compare the pronunciation. |
Vowel length changes meaning in Serbian more often than learners realise, and it is invisible in ordinary writing — neither alphabet marks it. That is exactly why listening has to come first here. Read both columns aloud and pay attention to how long you are holding each stressed vowel.
Marking and repeating
Read each sentence aloud and mark the syllable you stressed. Then listen to a native recording of something similar and check whether you agreed. Where you did not, repeat that single word ten times until the new pattern feels less strange than the old one. Stress is a motor habit, and habits change only with repetition.
Stress exercise
Translate these sentences into Serbian in both alphabets, then read them aloud and underline the stressed syllable in every word of three syllables or more.
- I speak Serbian slowly and clearly.

- Vowel length can change the rhythm of a word.
- I repeat the sentence at the same tempo.
