Serbian 102 - Here and There

Here and There in Serbian

A well known poem "Beautiful World" by Jovan Jovanović Zmaj can be the perfect content for learning the words such as:

  • Here - ovde
  • There - onde = tamo
  • Here it is = evo
  • There it is = eno

Song with Here and There

Let's listen to this slow version of the song:

Ala je lep ovaj svet
Onde potok ovde cvet
Tamo njiva ovde sad
Eno sunce evo hlad
Tamo dunav zlata pun
Onde trava ovde žbun
Slavuj pesmom ljulja lug, ja ga slušam i moj drug.

(translation)

Now it's time to listen to the faster version:

Learning Serbian Cyrillic with Easy to Read Books

I am happy to announce that my third book with easy texts both in Cyrillic and Latin alphabet, Who is Who, has been published!

Let me remind you of the first two books, which you can read along with me on my Youtube channel and Patreon page:

Easy to Read -  Šta možemo da vidimo na selu?

This book called "What you can see on the farm" is just the first part of the series covering animal and farm vocabulary,  together with  the most common verbs in Serbian.

Easy to Read -  Gde je ključ?

In this second book, Where is the Key? I continue using the most common verbs which require the accusative case. We are also practicing introducing ourselves and our friends.  There is also a task for you to find ONE hidden key. If you are having problems finding it, do let me know!

Easy to Read -  Ko je ko?

In the third book, Who is Who, we are dealing with some similar names like Jovan and Jovana or Ivan and Ivana. Since they can be a bit confusing, we are trying to figure out who is who, by following our friends in search of one another. At the end of the book there is an Activity book where you need to find the hidden page numbers... a little bit of Locative case will always prove useful in the days to come :D

The Fourth Easy to Read book

The name of the fourth book is "What we like" and it is all about games and seasons we like. It is to be published in October. This one is the easiest of all, and I am sure you'll love it! Watch this space :D

I am happy to present you my first Easy to read Serbian named "Šta možemo da vidimo na selu" book which consists of three parts:
  • First part written in Serbian Latin alphabet
  • Second part written in Serbian Cyrillic script
  • Third part with an exercise both in both alphabets
I have also recorded a video where you can listen to me all three parts of the book.
I would appreciate your honest feedback and suggestions as to which topics you would like me to cover in the future.
Have fun!
Many thanks to my patrons who continually support me in creating Serbian language learning materials and who give me invaluable feedback!

Serbian Language Course - Family

I hope you enjoyed following my free Serbian language course at the elementary level, dedicated to Greetings! This month I have been working on a new one where you can learn:

  • How to introduce your family members to someone
  • Hear clearly and learn to pronounce family members
  • Verbs to have + family members (in the appropriate case)
  • Short texts about this topic
All the video lessons and exercises are both in the Cyrillic and Latin script so you can learn Cyrillic in no time :)

Today I wanted to share one of the video exercises from the course.

More videos with conjugations are on this playlist.

Serbian with Easy Texts and Exercises

Today we are practicing Serbian with this simple exercise:

The meaning of this story is as follows:

Marina likes to eat sweets, especially chocolate, Eurocream, jam and buiscits. She likes to drink milk, juice and coffee. Each morning while she has breakfast, Marina doesn't watch TV, but she is on the Internet, listens to songs on Youtube and sings them.

The missing verbs are as follows:

  1. VOLETI (ja volim ... oni vole)
  2. PITI (ja pijem... oni piju)
  3. GLEDATI (ja gledam ... oni gledaju)
  4. SLUŠATI (ja slušam... oni slušaju)
  5. PEVATI (ja pevam... oni pevaju)

After doing this exercise, you can record your own story by making comparisons. For example:

Marina voli da jede slatkiše, ali ja ne volim da jedem slatkiše. OR Marina voli da jede Eurokrem, ali ja ne volim da ga jedem. (Pronouns: him/it >>>"ga" stands for "it", but in Serbian "Eurocream" is he, so here "ga" means "him", her >>>"je" and "them"= ih, regardless of the grammar gender)
For more advanced students: Write this text or record it in the past simple or future simple!
For all the versions and video lessons based on this text, check out my Patreon blog. Hvala :)
