Serbian Phrases through Songs

If you're learning Serbian, you'll surely need these commonly used phrases (on a daily basis LOL):

Ostaviti (nekoga) na miru = Leave (someone) alone (e.g. ostavi me na miru! = leave me alone)
Poludeću = I'll go crazy
Učiniću sve da + present tense = I'll do everything to...
Možda i grešim = maybe I'm mistaken
Samo nebo zna koliko + phrase = (only) heaven knows how much ...

Learn Serbian for 365 Days - Songs and Poems

Last time I explained why I incorporated so many beautiful Serbian songs into my teaching. Besides these popular songs, I'd also like to share the well-known poems, which are the part of Serbian culture and heritage.

Although learning them by heart is not very popular nowadays, I still remember many a verse because we had to learn them by heart at school a few decades ago (yes, I'm that old). Once you mention a few lines of a well-known verse, it will surely enrich the conversation, triggering some deeper layers of meaning and connotation.

That's why I'll create a follow-up exercise, for each poem or song, which you can do while listening to the pronunciation. I'll emphasize in bold the most prominent and recognizable lines, so you can learn them if you wish to :)

I want to share it with you here because this version is easy to follow, especially with the lyrics in the proper Latin script (not the "ošišana verzija", which is commonly found on Youtube - guess not many people heard of this lovely SlovoMajstor remedy).

Serbian Idioms with "Videti"

I'm sure you've thoroughly practised the verb "videti" with the video lesson with gadgets and appliances and the "conjugator video". Now it's time to learn to recognize different parts of speech with this verb through the list of common phrases and idioms in Serbian :

Verb form: VIDETI

Ooo, koga to vidim ! = expressing surprise when you see someone (As I leve and breathe!; Well, what do you know; Lo and behold)
Imaš šta da vidiš! = something worth seeing ( A sight for sore eyes, Something to look at; A million-dollar look)
Sad GA vidiš, sad GA ne vidiš = a fly-by-night (an unreliable, dishonest person) / now you see it, now you don't (a magician's trick)
Što video, ne video = to turn a blind eye on sth.; mum's the word (to pretend not to have seen anything)

Noun form: VID (sight), VIDelo (sight / light), VIDik (view/perspective)

Izneti (nešto) na videlo = to bring something to light (to reveal); to bring soemthing into the open
Izgubiti (nešto) iz vida = to lose sight of something
Imati (nešto) u vidu = to bear in mind, to take into account, to keep sight of something
Nestati sa vidika = to recede from view / to vanish into thin air / to fade away

Gerund or "glagolska imenica" : VIĐENJE (ending in -nje, which corresponds with English -ing)

Do (skorog) viđenja = so long (a farewell)
Poznavati nekog iz viđenja = to know someone by sight / to have a nodding acquaintance with someone

Past Participle or Trpni glagolski pridev (adjective): VIĐEN (ending in -n or -t, which corresponds with English -ed or PP form of the verb)

Rado viđen = popular, in high favour

Notice the use of this phrase "rado viđen" + "gost" at the very beginning of the famous song "Jabuke i Vino":

Learn about Serbian Verbs with Children's Songs

Another great song which all the devojčice i dečaci sing is "Ivin voz" by Dragan Laković . It's also perfect to introduce a complex lexical system of the Serbian verb (which mirrors English phrasal verbs as well as perfectve /imperfective aspects ) :

The Cyrillic script version:
Ћиху, Ћиху, ћиху-ху...

Из куће је излетео на улицу Ива
сав задихан захуктао к'о локомотива.

Видели га другови, па за њим и они
потрчали, захуктали к'о прави вагони.

Ћиху, Ћиху, ћиху-ху...

Сад улицом тако јури та чудна колона
то воз Ивин путује са седам вагона.

The Latin script version:
Ćihu, Ćihu, ćihu-hu...

Iz kuće je izleteo na ulicu Iva

Interesting verb lexicology:

leteti = to fly, IZleteti = to fly out of
huktati = to make a sound like a to train (figuratively: to complain) , ZAhuktati se = to gather speed (for a train, or when doing something)
trčati = to run, POtrčati = to start running

Endings for the 1st, -am, conjugation group of verbs in Serbian in the Present Tense are
-am - aš - a -amo -ate -aju

Endings for the Accusative Fem. Nouns:

Nouns in Singular + question ''šta'' (what) requires the noun in Accusative - find out what the rule is for the Nouns which are Feminine Singular:

ŠTA ČEKAŠ? ČEKam tvoj ODGOVOR. (odgovor - answer)
ŠTA ČITAŠ? ČITam KNJIGU. (knjiga - book)
ŠTA GLEDAŠ? GLEDam PRIREDBU. (priredba - show)
ŠTA IGRAŠ? IGRam ODBOJKU. (odbojka - volleyball)
ŠTA IMAŠ? IMam SVESKU. (sveska - notebook)

Let's practise:

Yes, you are right, the ending for Sg. Fem. Noun in Accusative is - U, while
Sg. Masc and neuter have no endings (at least not in the inanimate category).
Now, let's check what's happening in the Plural with Fem. nouns:

ŠTA OBOŽAVAŠ? OBOŽAVAM KNJIGe. (knjiga - knjige = book - books)
ŠTA PEVAŠ? PEVAM PESMe. (pesma - pesme = song -songs)
ŠTA PRIČAŠ? PRIČAM PRIČe. (priča - priče = story - stories)
ŠTA KUPUJEŠ? KUPUJEM HALJINe. (haljina - haljine = dress - dresses)
ŠTA RUČAŠ? RUČAM PEČURKe. (pečurka - pečurke = mashrooms)
ŠTA ČEKAŠ ? ČEKAM ODGOVORe (odgovori - odgovore = answers)

Yeees, you are rigth again - since Fem. Nouns in Plural take -e, in Accusative Pl, nothing changes ;)

Pl. Masc. gets an -i ending, and it also changes to -e, like in "odgovor" - so for plural, don't think
twice, simply add -E and you'll do it splendidly :)

Neuter nouns in Pl. add -a, but then they don't change in Accusative, which is also very nice. So, we
have the example "odelo" in Sg., "odela" in Pl. and then, "Kupio sam odela" IN Acc. is the same.
