Serbian 301 - Adjectives in Locative

Before we start working on Serbian adjective suffixes in the Locative case, let's listen to this beautiful song, where you'll get acquainted with one of the suffixes and learn it without thinking much about grammar:

U Novom Sadu,
u Novom Sadu hej
u Novom Sadu hej
ostadoh kraj tebe
(2x)

Ref. 2x
Oj Jelena oj Jelice
zagrli me, polubi me

Kraj tamburaša
i dobrog vina hej
u Novom Sadu hej
ostadoh zbog tebe
(2x)

Ref. 2x

Čim zora svane
i sunce grane hej
u Novom Sadu hej
šaljem ti poljubce.
(2x)

Ref. 2x

U Novom Sadu

Serbian for Kids - Locative Case Fun Way

Serbian for Kids - Locative Case

There are two parts in this video. In the first part you are just listening to me searching for and finding numbers. In the second part, I added the answer key to the left and right, so you can see why some words get an "i" at the end, and the others get an "u" at the end.
So, whenever you want to say that you are somewhere, we use the Locative case which will change the ending of the word which describes your the location. The same is with the numbers in this video.

Locative Case Fun Way

Words ending in -a (most of Feminine, Singular)
GDE su brojevi stranica?
OGRADA -  4 je na ogradi
ČARAPA - 6 je na čarapi
TRAVA - 8 je na travi
PATIKA - 10 je na patici
MAJICA - 14 je na majici
KOŠULJA - 14 je na košulji
ŠKOLA - 16 je na školi
KLACKALICA - 18 je na klackalici
PALMA -  20 je na palmi
KOSA - 22 je na kosi
TRAMPOLINA - 24 je na trampolini
Words ending in a consonant (Masc. Sg.) or -E/O (Neut. Sg.)
BALON - 5 je na balonu
OBLAK - 7 je na oblaku
CVET  - 9 je na cvetu
DRVO - 11 je na drvetu
ŠORC  - 13 je na šorcu
TOBOGAN - 15 je na toboganu
CIRKUS - 21 je na cirkusu
KROV - 21 je na krovu
OBRAZ - 23 je na obrazu
LICE  - 23 je na licu
U potrazi za ostalim brojevima = Searching for other numbers
Now it's time for you to search the other part of the book and write in the comments where all the other numbers are... I'm curious! Jedva čekam vaše odgovore :)

Where is Marko Now - Serbian Locative 3

In our fun Serbian comics we can learn where people are, or where they were in the past. Today we are using the same case, the Locative case to express where we are in a house and after that we can also say what we are doing in the house.

Instead of a comic, I recorded a video for you, so you can practice saying simple sentences:

  • Ovo je HODNIK. Ovo je Marko. Marko je u hodnikU. On ne radi ništa u hodniku.
  • Ovo je KUHINJA. Ovo je Marko. Marko je u kuhinjI. On pravi doručak u kuhinji.
Can you listen to the rest of the story and make similar sentences for:

  1. KUPATILO
  2. TRPEZARIJA
  3. SPAVAĆA SOBA
  4. RADNA SOBA
  5. TERASA
  6. TAVAN
  7. DNEVNA SOBA

Singular Nouns in Locative in Serbian

Before thinking about the grammar, try to hear how I am using these words with the prepositon U or NA. If you are not sure, here comes a bit of advice:

Sg. Masc >>> add -U (u hodniku, u Londonu, u muzeju)
Sg. Fem >>> add - I (u kuhinji, u Moskvi, u galeriji)

Where are you today? Part 2

What do you want to do TODAY?
Šta želite da radite DANAS?

Today I am in Paris. I want to see the Mona Lisa.
DANAS sam u Parizu.  Želim da vidim Mona Lizu.

Made with ToonyTool.com While in the previous lesson we noticed that the Locative Singular ending was only -i, it was like that simply because we were in places which are in Feminine Singular (U Moskvi, Aziji, Evropi, Budimpešti...)

However, today we are in having fun  in places which are Masculine Singular and that's why we add the suffix -u at the end of each place:

  1. Ja sam danas u Parizu. = Danas sam u Parizu.
  2. ...Beograd >>> Beogradu
  3. ...Lisabon >>> Lisabonu
  4. ... Sidnej >>> Sidneju
  5. ... Niš >>> Nišu
  6. ...muzej >>> muzeju
  7. ... centar >>> centru

Serbian Lesson 4 for Pre-intermediate Level

I'm sure that now you are much more confident in using the Locative case to express where you are:
Last time you practised the Locative with the verbs:
  • govoriti = to speak
  • živeti = to live
In this fourth lesson at pre-intermediate level of Serbian, you are going to discover that the Dative case  which combines with the verbs describing movement, like "going towards" = ići ka, has the same form as the Locative, which is awesome!
Before we do this fun exercise (in my classes my students and I play this language game), let me remind you of the conjugations for the new verb, which we'll need in this lesson:
  • ići = to go
We'll need the imperative form "go", which can be used :
  • formally: "idite ka" ("go towards" with Vi)
  • informally: "idi ka" ("go towards" with ti)

Serbian Language Day 9 - Pre-intermediate Course, Lesson 2

You can always revise the simple structures by following the Serbian for Beginner course tag, as well as Serbian Lesson Pages.

In our previous pre-intermediate lesson we covered:
Let's use the similar group of words, this time "places in the city" to express our whereabouts:

  • "Ćao! Gde si ?" = Hi, where are you ?
  • "Zdravo! Sada sam u muzeju. A ti ? " = Hello, I'm in the museum. And you ?
  • "Ja sam na autobuskoj stanicu ! Vidimo se za pet minuta!" = I'm at the square ! See you in five minutes!

Serbian Language 365 Day 3 - Intermediate level & Past Tense

Let's practise the Simple Past Tense in the Serbian language. While the beginner and pre-intermediate courses of Serbian  focus is on phrases, present tense, modals and cases, the intermediate course focuses on aspects, explaining the subtle differences between "odmarati" and "odmoriti" and similar.

Since we are at the very beginning of everyday Serbian lesson series, let me introduce you to some of the earlier posts covering this topic:
...as well as one of the Youtube videos, which somehow connect with the yesterday's post, so now it can be easily understood:

Text : "Gde si bila ?" (Fem. Sg.) / "Gde si bio?" (Masc. Sg.) = Where were you ?
Fem. Sg. Bila sam u ...
Masc. Sg. Bio sam u ...

Serbian Language 365 Day 2 - Serbian for Pre-intermediate Level

In the past five years I've scattered numerous blog posts with lessons of Serbian and corresponding grammatical explanations not only on this blog and Youtube and Youtube but all over the Internet. One of the many reasons for starting 365 Days of Serbian Language was to connect them and tag them correctly.

Since the previous post covered the verb TO BE in the Simple Present tense, I think that all the students who are either at elementary and pre-intermediate level can easily learn to use the same form with the Locative case, saying where you are:

At the end of each video lesson, let's revisit some of the previous posts covering the same, or similar topic:

Verbs of Movement in Locative, Dative and Accusative Case in Serbian Language

In the Serbian language, one can express location using the verbs which require nouns in different cases.
The dative and locative case have the same form, but wheras the dative case needs a verb which  denotes movement and direction, the locative case requires a stative verb or verbs expressing who we are talking about
Dative:
Sg. Fem. Kreni prema kući. Prilazim crkvi. (krenuti prema = leave for, prilaziti = approach)
Sg. Masc. Idi ka Beogradu. Kreni prema muzeju. (ići prema, krenuti prema)
Sg. Neuter. Idi ka selu. Krećemo se ka jezeru.  (ići ka, kretati ka = "ka" is the same as "prema")
Plural: Prilazimo + kućama, crkvama, jezerima, selima, muzejima
Locative:
Sg. Fem. Sedim u kući. Ja sam u crkvi. (sedeti u = sit in )
Sg. Masc. On priča o Briselu. (pričati = to talk)
Sg. Neuter. Nalazim se u selu. (nalaziti se  = to be in/at)
Plural: Pričam o + kućama, crkvama, oblacima, dvorištima, selima (I'm talking about houses, churches, clouds, gardens and villages)

The accusative case is also used with the verbs which denote movement, but it denotes the aim  or goal, as can be seen in the following examples:
Sg. Fem. Idem u Budimpeštu. Ptica sleće na granu. (ići u = go to, sleteti=land)
Sg. Masc. Izađi pred muzej.  Avion sleće na aerodrom. (izađi pred = come to, sleteti)
Sg. Neuter. Izađi u dvorište. Stigli smo na selo. (stići = arrive)
Pl. Fem: Ptice sleću na grane.
Pl. Masc. Izađi pred muzeje.
Pl. Neuter. Reka teče kroz sela.
