Exercise with Advanced Serbian

What is so special about 3, 6 and 9?

Numbers and Addition in Serbian

Let's watch the video where you can see and hear  numbers being added in Serbian. If you click CC you will be able to follow the English translation as well. If you decrease the speed, from normal to 0.75, you can practice your pronunciation :) Have fun!

For more advanced learners, there are a few, actually 3, questions:
1. Can you recognize the accent? Which one is it - Serbian or Bosnian or Montenegrin?
2. Could you hear the name of the famous scientist who is mentioned in the video?
3. Why are numbers 3, 6, and 9 magical?

Advanced Serbian - Fun Serbian Customs

One of the customs in Serbia is to tear (cepati / pocepati) the shirt worn by the father who is celebrating his baby's birth. If you watched "Jutro će promeniti sve", you'll surely remember the scene with two fathers in torn shirts or t-shirts (pocepan(im) košulja(ma) ili majica(ma)).

One must wonder what is the origin of such a funny custom and I am sharing today with you a few answers to this question, which is of course in the form of an exercise. You just need to fill in the gaps with missing prepositions and enjoy reading the text. If you are not sure about the answers, you can first read the same text on Blic.

Serbian Advanced Course

Let me share the first lesson of my Serbian Course for advanced learners. It is based on the first episode of Državni posao and I am sure you are going to enjoy it!

Serbian Advanced Course, lesson 1

Prvi korak

Odgledati SAMO prvi minut https://youtu.be/McwPB-eQ2BY?t=16s (od 0.16 - 1.20). Dok gledate prvi minut BEZ tona recite gde se odvija ova sekvenca, kako izgledaju ljudi i šta mislite o čemu pričaju.
save image

Primer: Na samom početku vidimo dva čoveka koji sede u kancelariji. Oni ...

Drugi korak

Pročitati dijalog i postaviti pitanja o svemu što nije jasno:

  1. Zdravo, momci!
  2. Prepo si ga!
  3. Šta je Boškić, malo vunica uhvatila?... dok je brat vedrio i oblačio, a? šta je bilo, je li? Svemoćni?
  4. Šta s mojim bratom?
  5. Danas ja častim. Danas je moja čast … evo izvoli, Djordje… Pa šta je… ćerka mi upisala Akademiju, čoveče!
  6. Za frizera, akademiju Branković  u Beogradu?
  7. Ma vojnu akademiju u Moskvi, maršal Kutuzov…a,  boga mi ovi odlaze s vlasti, jedan po jedan.
  8. Šta ste, izvinjavam se što prekidam slavlje, ovaj...
  9. Živeli!
  10. Živeo!
  11. … a šta ste za mog brata pominjali? Pa on je još savetnik?
  12. Ne znam da li je još savetnik neko ko sedi na stepeništu i plaće.  Ja ne znam da li je to savetnik, al’ eto...
  13. A ko plaće?
  14. Ko plače? Moja mater… tvoj brat, sedi plače…
  15. Ajoj bracoooo!

Treći korak

DODATI TAČNA IMENA NA PRAZNA MESTA
Boškić: Boškić,  Boškiću, Boškićevog, Boškića x2 ,

Torbica:  Torbica x2

  7. Pobediti na takmičenju - pobeda

Razgovor:

1. U kojim situacijama ljudi časte jedni druge u Srbiji/tvojoj zemlji?
2. Kada ste vi poslednji put častili nekoga /bili na časti?
3. Opišite taj događaj (povod / gde / ko/ kako / najinteresantnije)

Free Serbian Language Course

Since many of my students told me how easy it is to learn Serbian by singing, I decided to introduce nice and catchy tunes with nice and easy Serbian collocations into my new Five Minute Serbian course.

Yesterday I released a free version of this course, so you can join it and see whether this way of learning suits you.

At first I thought it would be a great idea to organize each course from the very beginner to the most advanced levels (from A1 to C2), but my students suggested I should divide them into two groups - from A1 to B1 and another one from B2 to C2. That will allow me to add more language related lessons for each level.

For example, A1 level now covers not only "The weather/wine is good" but also two new chapters dedicated to members of family and how to introduce them. A2 level doesn't cover only what WAS the weather like, but also who WAS at home/work etc. B1 level is covering asking "kakva vs. kakav" when asking questions such as "What was the party like?" and similar.

Let me share with you two brand new lessons:
  • At A1 level

  • At A2 level

At the moment the course has more than three hours of content, but it is getting longer and richer each day. Once you join the course, you are given the links to the follow up exercises and quizzes. Since the course is expanding, the price of the course is going to increase accordingly. It is $US49 right now, but for the followers of this blog there is a 50% discount which is valid only in April.

The beauty of this series of the courses is that you will be able to add your suggestions and influence the topic of the upcoming chapters.

The following course will be dedicated to verbs and prepositions which require the Accusative case and I am sure you will love it! For now, do join the free version of this course and leave me your feedback in the comment below or through our joint Facebook page called StudySerbian.

Serbian with Easy Texts and Exercises

Today we are practicing Serbian with this simple exercise:

The meaning of this story is as follows:

Marina likes to eat sweets, especially chocolate, Eurocream, jam and buiscits. She likes to drink milk, juice and coffee. Each morning while she has breakfast, Marina doesn't watch TV, but she is on the Internet, listens to songs on Youtube and sings them.

The missing verbs are as follows:

  1. VOLETI (ja volim ... oni vole)
  2. PITI (ja pijem... oni piju)
  3. GLEDATI (ja gledam ... oni gledaju)
  4. SLUŠATI (ja slušam... oni slušaju)
  5. PEVATI (ja pevam... oni pevaju)

After doing this exercise, you can record your own story by making comparisons. For example:

Marina voli da jede slatkiše, ali ja ne volim da jedem slatkiše. OR Marina voli da jede Eurokrem, ali ja ne volim da ga jedem. (Pronouns: him/it >>>"ga" stands for "it", but in Serbian "Eurocream" is he, so here "ga" means "him", her >>>"je" and "them"= ih, regardless of the grammar gender)
For more advanced students: Write this text or record it in the past simple or future simple!

Advanced Serbian - Detecting Synonyms

For all of you who are advanced learners of Serbian, here comes a challenging exercise based on this lovely song:

The idea is for you to listen to this song and in each part of the song to detect 3 words which are synonyms with the words written in the capital letters above that part. Srećno!

KAFANA - NEDAVNO - NEOBIČAN
Znate l' priču o Vasi Ladačkom
i ja sam je tek onomad čuo
jednom devet dana nije izlazio iz birtije
kažu da je bio čudna sorta
BOLESTAN - SELJAK - MAJKA
Otac mu je bio sitni paor
'ranio je sedam gladnih usti
mati mu je bila plava
tiha, nežna, jektičava
umrla je s trideset i nešto
STO - NEKOLIKO - UVEK
Imali su par jutara zemlje
malu kuću na kraju sokaka
na astalu navek hleba
taman tol'ko kol'ko treba
al' je Vasa hteo mnogo više
KOČIJE - CRNI - BOGAT
Želeo je konje vrane, po livadi razigrane
sat sa zlatnim lancem i salaše
želeo je njive plodne, vinograde blagorodne
u karuce pregnute čilaše
ali nije mog'o da ih ima

OŽENIO - VOLIŠ - SIROMAŠAN
Voleo je lepu, al' sirotu
uz'o bi je samo da je znao
voles jednom u životu
sad bogatu il' sirotu
to ne bira pamet nego srce
PRESTATI - BOGATA DEVOJKA - ZA STALNO
Sve se nad'o da će ljubav proći
zanavek je otiš'o iz sela
nikad nije pis'o nikom
venč'o se sa mirazdžikom
jedinicom, kćerkom nekog gazde
KONJI SIVE DLAKE - RAZDRAGAN - DŽEPNI SAT
Dobio je konje vrane, po livadi razigrane
sat sa zlatnim lancem i salaše
dobio je njive plodne, vinograde blagorodne
u karuce pregnute čilaše
sve je im'o - ništa im'o nije

LJUDI KOJI PROVODE VREME U KAFANI - VRAG -  POČETI PITI
Propio se, nije prošlo mnogo
dušu svoju đavolu je prod'o
znali su ga svi birtaši
tražio je spas u čaši
ali nije mog'o da ga nađe

INFARKT - PALA - NA SREDINI

Mlad je, kažu, bio kad je umro
'sred birtije od srčane kapi
klonula mu samo glava
ko da drema, ko da spava
i još pamte šta je zadnje rek'o
KOČIJA - BOGAT - BESPOTREBNO

Džaba bilo konja vranih, po livadi razigranih
džaba bilo sata i salaša
džaba bilo njiva plodnih, vinograda blagorodnih
džaba bilo karuca, ćilasa
kada nisam s onom koju volem
kada nisam s onom koju volem

Advanced Serbian exercises - Sixth June

I have always enjoyed doing short tasks based on authentic news and fun texts. That is why I want to create and share with you the same kind of exercises based on daily news, both in the Latin alphabet and Cyrillic script. Today I'm sharing with you one of the common news section called "Dogodilo se na današnji dan" - "On this day in history" from KratkeVesti :)

Are You Proficient in Serbian?

From time to time I get a request to publish more exercises for Serbian for an advanced and even proficient level. I guess that creating short tasks based on various films and series in Serbian certainly helps. One of such series which I wanted to recommend for more proficient speakers of Serbian is Prvi Servis, sponsored by VreleGume. I love their short format and a really great cast.  The topics are everyday problems of ordinary people.

In the first episode, there is a short monologue with lots of mistakes, which can be easily corrected by an advanced student of Serbian.

Would you like to give it a try? You can write your suggestion in the comment below!

Example 1:

1:25 min: Kada sam u vaša zemlja ja ovo, a kod kuće imam Volvo.
*Correction:  Kada sam u vašOJ zmljI

Your task:
3:35 min: Majstor kaže da je teško kvarnost velika. Ili je amortizer ili je može biti da je možda ova …. kako kaže on kod vas… balans štanglica, ili je može biti da je stabilizatorski dio. Kaže popraviće, hitno mi je potrebno auto za sutra.
A auto moram imati jer mater meni stiže.

You can write your suggestion in the comment below!

Practising Phrases in Serbian - I need

If you were happy with my short video lesson about the very simple form of the phrase "I need somethingyesterday, I am sure you are now ready for a few exercises. Let me start with the easier ones and then I'll add some for more advanced students:

  • For Beginners: Practising only "Treba mi +  different international words"

  • For Intermediate students: Practising "Treba + mi/  ti / Vam / mu / joj / nam / im + international words"
d. Test

  • For Advanced students: Practising the past tense form "I needed + something", which is more complicated because here the past tense form of the word has to agree with the direct object (something): "TrebalE su mi jabukE // TrebalI su joj prijateljI // TrebalA nam je vodA" (+ word order with 3rd person Sg of the direct object).
