Word Order in Serbian - Future Tense

This is the third part of the series of  blog posts about the word order or  "red reči" in a Serbian sentence. I covered the word order in the present tense and past tense and today's topic is the future tense. If you find the letter  N next to the sentence, it means that it is the most neutral / natural sounding sentence:

One word verb: pevati (to sing)

Future tense of PEVATI (to sing):   "I'll sing."

Subject (S) + predicate (P)

  • Pevaću. N
  • Ja ću pevati
  • Ti ćeš igrati, a ja ću pevati. N
  • Sedećeš i slušaćeš, a ja ću pevati. N
  • Prijatelji su čuli kako ću pevati na koncertu. N
  • Priznajem da ću  pevati na koncertu. N

S + P +  direct object (dO)
  • Pevaću pesmu. N
  • Ja ću pevati  pesmu.
  • Čuće oni kako ću im otpevati  pesmu.  N (im= njima= to them, indirect object)
  • Svi su čuli da ću  pevati tu pesmu. N

S  + P + dO + adverb of time (AoT)

  • Pevaću pesme svaki dan. N
  • Svaki dan ću pevati pesmu. N
  • Moji prijatelji su pitali kada ću pevati pesmu sledeći put. N

S + P + dO + AoT + AoP (adverb of place)

  • Svaki dan ću pevati pesmu kod kuće. N
  • Kod kuće svaki dan ću pevati pesmu.
  • Moje komšije će sutra čuti zašto ću kod kuće pevati pesmu. N
  • Moje komšije će čuti zašto ću  pevati pesmu za nedelju dana kod kuće. N

Past Tense in Serbian

Let's make a short comparison of the Present Simple and Past Simple in Serbian with this "drinks video" :)

  • Šta obično piješ / pijete tokom dana ?
  • Šta obično piješ / pijete kada izađeš uveče ?
  • Šta si juče pio  / pila ? / Šta ste juče pili ?*

*translation:

  • What do you usually drink during the day ? ("piješ" informal, "pijete" formal)
  • What do you usually drink when you go out at night ?
  • What did you drink yesterday ? ("pio" for masculine singular, "pila" for feminine singular, "pili" for the second person singular, used formally, or for the second person plural, when you are talking to more people)

Word order in Serbian Sentences in the Simple Past

In one of the previous blog posts about the "red reči" in a Serbian sentence, I covered the word order in the present tense and it's time to talk about the past simple. Don't forget that the letter  N is used for the most neutral / natural sounding sentence:

One word verb: pevati (to sing)

Past tense OF "I sang / I was singing."

Subject (S) + predicate (P)

  • Ti si igrao i ja sam pevala. N
  • Komšije su čule kako sam pevala. N
  • Priznajem da sam pevala. N

S + P +  direct object (dO)
  • Pevala sam pesmu. N
  • Ja sam pevala pesmu.
  • (not neutral, but rather poetic word order would be: Pesmu sam pevala / Ja sam pesmu pevala. / pesmu pevala sam ja (reminded me of "zaboravio sam jutros pesmu jednu ja" - watch the video)
  • Čuješ da sam otpevala  pesmu.  N
  • Svi su čuli da sam pevala pesmu.

S  + P + dO + adverb of time (AoT)

  • Pevala sam pesmu svaki dan. N
  • Svaki dan sam pevala pesmu. N
  • Moji prijatelji su juče čuli kada sam pevala pesmu. N

Serbian 302 - Serbian Lexicology, Who Recovered?

    Serbian 302 - Serbian Lexicology

One of the very productive prefixes to form a verb out of an adjective is the prefix O-. If you know the meaning of the following adjectives, you'll surely know how to make verbs out of them and expand your vocabulary in an easy way:

  • ZDRAV
  • GLADAN
  • PAMETAN
  • BOGAT
  • ŽENJEN
  • SLOBODAN

  • Serbian 302 - Who Recovered?

Before checking the meaning of the words, can you simply add an O in front of each adjective. To make it a verb you also need to add the -O suffix (for Masc. form of the verb in the past tense).
    For example:  OZDRAVIO

    1. Ko je OzdraviO?

    I googled the following stories:
    1. Ozdravio Frančesko Toti
    2. Ozdravio Čeda

    Serbian Lexicology - Verb Formation

Now, let's do the same thing for each of these newly created verbs:
  • GLADAN - ogladneo
  • PAMETAN - opametio
  • BOGAT - obogatio
  • ŽENJEN - oženio
  • SLOBODAN - oslobodio

  • After googling them, answer the following questions:
      2. Ko je OgladneO?
        3. Ko se _pameti__?
          5. Ko se _bogati_?
            6. Ko se  _ženi_?
              7. Ko je _slobodi_ ?

Aspect in Serbian - Odmoriti or Odmarati?

Do you know the difference between odmoriti and odmArAti (to have a rest)? Which one shows a finished action (perfective aspect), which one shows an action in progress (imperfective aspect)?

If you know the word trAjAti, which means to lAst, it will help you connect the form with double A with the action in progress, which shows that odmArAti is obviously used to show that you are or were "having a  rest / resting".

On the other hand, the form with odmORIti, shows that you have had a rest and that's it, the result is more important than duration, so this form shows the perfective aspect.

Their various forms and differences in present and past tenses are so subtle, so I created a set of exercises for you to learn more about this weird odmoriti-odmarati duo by actually using them:) Before you see all the forms below, try to do this Micromatch exercise:

How much time did you need? Guess it wasn't that hard, once you were able to see the possible answers. For some more difficult tests, you might need all the verb forms in one place! Now, let me reveal them to you:

              Present tense

              - odmoriti se: odmorim - odmoriš - odmori // odmorimo - odmorite - odmore
              - odmArAti se : odmaram - odmaraš - odmara // odmaramo - odmarate -odmaraju

              Past tense

              - odmorio - odmorila - odmorilo // odmorili - odmorile - odmorila
              - odmarao - odmarala - odmaralo // odmarali - odmarale - odmarala

              Have fun!

              Collocation with "videti" in Serbian

While there are so many useful tools to check your spelling / grammar / vocabulary / idioms / pronunciation ... for the English language, there are just a few such tools for Serbian (I listed them in the sidebar to the right and I (ir)regularly send them to all the Serbian Activator subscribers).

One of the most useful things a student need, starting from the pre-intermediate level is to know verb collocations. That's why I'll try to connect the verbs and nouns from the previous posts and write a list of the most common collocations for the verb "to see" (videti):

              • Verbs and phrases commonly used after "to see"
              1. vidim kako ... (np. vidi kako se to radi)
              2. vidimo se ponovo
              3. vidi taj izraz
              4. vidi da li ima ... (np. vidi da li ima hleba)
              5. vidi šta ... (np. vidi šta nam treba)
              6. vidi kako mi stoji (for example when you're trying sth. on, this phrase means "look how / if it suits=fits me" )
              • Words before "to see"
              1. mogu videti / da vidim
              2. samo vidi

              4. volim da vidim
              5. dođi da vidiš
              6. zapanjio bi se da vidiš...
              7. drago mi je da vas vidim
              • Adverbs collocated with "to see"
              1. + (ne)jasno (if a + is before the word, it means that the verb "videti" comes before that word. For example : videti + (ne)jasno = + (ne)jasno)
              2. jedva +
              3. odjednom + (commonly in the past tense: odjednom sam video)
              4. tačno +
              5. + kristalno-jasno
              6. slabo +
Do you have any other ideas which "videti" collocations are worth adding to the list ?

Serbian Language 365 Day 2 - Serbian for Pre-intermediate Level

In the past five years I've scattered numerous blog posts with lessons of Serbian and corresponding grammatical explanations not only on this blog and Youtube and Youtube but all over the Internet. One of the many reasons for starting 365 Days of Serbian Language was to connect them and tag them correctly.

Since the previous post covered the verb TO BE in the Simple Present tense, I think that all the students who are either at elementary and pre-intermediate level can easily learn to use the same form with the Locative case, saying where you are:

At the end of each video lesson, let's revisit some of the previous posts covering the same, or similar topic:

Practising Phrases in Serbian - I need

If you were happy with my short video lesson about the very simple form of the phrase "I need somethingyesterday, I am sure you are now ready for a few exercises. Let me start with the easier ones and then I'll add some for more advanced students:

              • For Beginners: Practising only "Treba mi +  different international words"

              • For Intermediate students: Practising "Treba + mi/  ti / Vam / mu / joj / nam / im + international words"
              d. Test

              • For Advanced students: Practising the past tense form "I needed + something", which is more complicated because here the past tense form of the word has to agree with the direct object (something): "TrebalE su mi jabukE // TrebalI su joj prijateljI // TrebalA nam je vodA" (+ word order with 3rd person Sg of the direct object).

Serbian 201 - Present and Past of Raditi

One of the best ways to practice different tenses is to contrast them.  Today, the focus is on the verb TO WORK = raditi. Can you figure out which one is PAST and which one is PRESENT tense?

              1. Šta radiš?
              2. Šta si radila?
              3. Radimo u školi.
              4. Radili smo u bolnici.
              5. Sada ništa ne radim.
              6. Nisam ništa radila.
Yes, I am sure you guessed that 1-3-5 sentences are in the present tense and the others are in the past. Now, let's do one exercise to choose the verb which is missing

Past Tense in Serbian - Common Mistakes

If you watched our previous podcast, you'll be aware of the fact that Jeremija keeps making mistakes, and I do my best to help him understand which correct forms to use. This time the topic was "bio" or "bila":

Are there any other mistakes which I didn't correct ?

Serbian Past Tense - Bio Bila or Bilo?

              Bio Bila Bilo

Verb To Be in the Singular,  simple past form

              SINGULAR
Ja sam bio = I was masculine
Ja sam bila = I was feminine

Ti si bio = You were masc. sg.
Ti si bila = You were fem. sg.

On je bio = He was , obviously masc. sg.
Ona je bila = She was, obviously fem. sg.
Ono je bilo = It was,  neuter, sg.

When you drop the subject (noun or pronoun), you start with the very past tense of the verb to be and this is what we are practicing now with this game!

BIO SAM ... BILA SAM ... BILO JE...
